A US military plane crashed into the sea near the east coast on Friday, but the Marine Corps reported that the pilot was able to eject in time and was in stable condition.

The plane was an AV-8B Harrier II, an apparatus fighter single-engine, short takeoff and vertical landing capability.

"The pilot was rescued by an H-60 Seahawk approximately 17h28 local" (22H28 GMT), said Lt. first Maida Zheng, adding that the accident was under investigation.

"The pilot was transported to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and is in stable condition. The exact condition and location of the wreckage were unknown," Zheng told AFP.

"There has been reported a field of debris near the ejection site, about two miles (3.2 kilometers) from the coast, but at this point I have no details of the rescue plan," he added.

The pilot, whose name was not specified, had been conducting flight training after leaving Wilmington International Airport, with the intention of returning to the same airport.

The squadron to which it belongs provides offensive air support, armed reconnaissance and air defense for the 2nd Expeditionary Force Marine Corps.
