Luis Abinader, a wealthy businessman with no experience in state management is the main opposition candidate to face President Danilo Medina, favorite to win re-election in Sunday's election in the Dominican Republic.
With 29% of the vote, according to a Gallup poll of April 25, Abidaner aspires to the presidential chair confident that Medina not achieve the 50% plus one of the votes to avoid a runoff.
This economist and businessman is postulated 48 years after a period in which their organization of origin, the social democratic Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), was partitioned into two.
His candidacy is that of Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), a faction of the PRD who took the place of a tiny organization founded by his father, which changed its name and symbols to create a new force.
His campaign against the Medina focused on accusing the government of corruption and inaction against insecurity, while hired the former mayor Rudolph Guiliani New York, who lectured in Santo Domingo on the subject.
Raising the banner of austerity, Abinader promises to lower public spending, eliminating unnecessary budget items and duplication of functions in the State and social programs increase subsidies for poor families.

His grandfather came to Dominican Republic from Lebanon in 1889. He is the son of Rosa Sula Corona and Jose Rafael Abinader, who has a long political career in which he has been finance minister and senator in social democratic governments. He is married to Raquel Arbaje and father of three daughters.
His family has investments in hotels, at the University O & M and mining. Abinader is currently CEO of Abicor group, which operates large tourism projects in the country, in addition to the company Cementos Santo Domingo, listed as vice president.
Late last year, the Abinader Corona family reported that the government of Medina withdrew the operating license of the cement, I argued that he was only "exploration concession", which he described as "abuse of power politically motivated".
Abinader studied economics at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo and did postgraduate study at the Institute Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and other studies in American universities.
From childhood he showed leadership qualities, according to the lawyer and copartisan Orlando Jorge Mera, his classmate for several years in primary and secondary. "Louis was always a unifying umbrella body" described AFP.
